Tamil Nadu leaders want formation of Cauvery Management Board

What next to solve row, Karunanidhi asks state government.

Chennai: DMK chief M. Karunanidhi and other leaders on Tuesday wanted the formation of the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Monitoring Committee as a permanent solution to the dispute.

Karunanidhi said the supervisory committee is a body without legal sanction and power, wanted to know the next steps to be taken by the state government on the Cauvery dispute, after the Supreme Court verdict to release 13 tmc of water. He said the amount of water ordered by the apex court would not be sufficient for samba crops and the state government had been asked to move the supervisory committee for more water.

The DMK leader said the supervisory committee do not have any legal sanction or power to control any state. The committee had met twice in 2013 and there was no result, he pointed out.

He asked if the state government would file a review petition or exert pressure on the Centre to form the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulations Committee. He asked if the state government would convene an all-party meeting or send a delegation to meet the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to put political pressure.

Welcoming the verdict, MDMK leader Vaiko said the formation of the Cavuery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulations Committee would be the permanent solution to the dispute to ensure water sharing in distress period.
PMK youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to direct Karnataka to release 50 tmc of water as per the tribunal verdict. He also asked Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the next course of action.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan said Karnataka was following a dangerous approach of inciting riots without respecting the verdict of the Supreme Court or the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

TMC leader G.K. Vasan alleged that Karnataka government had instigated the riots in the state against the Supreme Court judgement.
