Minicoy leader gets airlifted to Kochi
KOCHI: An uneasy calm prevails on Minicoy island where police had went berserk on residents on August 25. A second leader on indefinite protest fast was airlifted to a Kochi hospital on Monday as his condition deteriorated. Dr Muthukoya, president of Lakshadweep BJP unit, started his indefinite fast a few days ago demanding action against the police officials including local sub-inspector Ameer Bin Muhammed and a judicial inquiry into the incident. A heart patient, Dr Muthukoya’s condition worsened on Monday following which he was airlifted to Kochi.
The police action on residents followed their protest on the VIP treatment given to K Moosa, a resident of Minicoy, who was arrested at Nedumbassery airport on August 14 on his arrival from Doha, on charges of sexually abusing minor children. Moosa is now in the custody of Lakshadweep police. CPM leader Dr Muneer who was severely thrashed in the police action is still undergoing treatment at an Aluva hospital. The Lakshadweep administration is yet to take any action against police officials involved other than calling back Ameer Bin to the Kavaratty headquarters.
The people of the island are reported to be upset over the inaction on the part of Lakshadweep MP Muhammed Faizal. However, following this, the MP has now demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident. Dr Muneer has also demanded that a judicial inquiry alone can deliver justice in the case. Mr Faizal in a statement said that the reaction of the people on the case related to Moosa was natural and spontaneous but what happened afterwards was planned. He also said that the Union Home Minister will be petitioned demanding judicial inquiry.
