Panel to look into issues of Gulf migrant workers
HYDERABAD: Union minister of state for external affairs and parliamentary affairs V. Muraleedharan assured to constitute a sub-committee for establishing a Gulf migrants’ welfare board. He said that Indian embassies in Gulf countries will be directed to trace all missing migrant workers from India, especially from Telangana state.
Rajya Sabha member K.R. Suresh Reddy, Gulf migrants’ rights and welfare forum founder-president Kotapati Narasimham Naidu and Malaysia Telugu Association president Shanti Priya met the union minister in New Delhi late Thursday night. They brought several issues pertaining to the Gulf migrant workers to the notice of the minister. They also spoke about the plight of Telangana youth who entered Gulf countries for earning a livelihood without valid documents. They submitted a list of missing Gulf migrants to the minister.
Muraleedharan said that he would direct Indian embassies in Gulf countries to coordinate with local authorities on the issue.
He also assured to take steps for implementation of referral wages in Gulf countries to Indian workers, Narasimha Naidu told Deccan Chronicle on Friday. Indian embassies should regularly contact prisons in Gulf countries to trace illegal migrants and the victims should be repatriated to the motherland, he said.
“We are hopeful that the union minister will take a decision on migrant workers welfare soon”, he said.
