THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An amount of Rs 153. 27 crore has been sanctioned for the completion of the second reach of the first phase of Karamana-Kaliyikkavila highway between Pravachambalam and Vazhimukku under Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said in a Facebook post that eviction has been completed on the 3.25 km from Pravachambalam to Vedivachankoil. The rest of the 1.75 km will be acquired soon, he said. The tendering process for awarding the work has been progressing.

As per revenue officials, the eviction of the stretch between Kodinada near Balaramapuram and Vazhimukku has been stalled for want of social impact study. This was expected to complete by the year end. Senior officials said a consensus could not be reached yet with the trader group at Balaramapuram on certain aspects of road construction. They were allegedly opposed to the PWD-NH wing’s plan to construct an underpass at the intersection that was synonymous for traffic jams.

“The plan now will be to kick-start construction for Pravachambalam to Kodinada and iron out the issues by this year. Eviction has been completed in most locations on the second reach of highway,” said an official. Reports said that the officials were planning to incorporate more facilities such as bus bays in the six- lane highway.
