THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed a hospital and urologist to pay up Rs 1.5 lakh for alleged negligence that caused glutal abscess that necessitated a surgery on a woman. The kidney stone patient who had come with pain in the peri-anal region
was given an injection which eventually led to glutal abscess that caused swelling. She later had to undergo surgery to drain the pus at Medical College Hospital. The woman hailing from Mangattukadavu said that she approached Punarjani Hospital, Peroorkada with the pain in the peri-anal region in August 2013.
She was admitted to the casualty and was given an injection by a duty nurse as per the instructions of Dr V. Satheesh Kumar. Since there was no relief for the pain she was given a few injections allegedly without any kind of examinations. The complainant was informed that the pain could be due to kidney stones. Some follow up scans and blood tests were prescribed for the next day. She was discharged from the hospital without any overnight observation. Also, her concerns regarding pain in the gluteal region were not addressed.
Later abscess developed in the region where injection was taken. She developed fever and chills and had to undergo a one hour surgery at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. The doctor, in his version stated that the woman had not complained of any such pain. After examination of evidence, a bench headed by forum president P Sudhir ordered the hospital officials to pay up Rs one lakh and '50,000 for expenses. The complainant was represented by her counsel NP Harikumar.
