Chennai: Couple injured after room floor caves in

Shoddily filled well underneath said to be reason.

Chennai: A 69-year-old man and his wife, staying in a ground floor flat of an apartment complex in Ambattur, escaped with minor injuries when their bedroom floor caved in on Saturday night.

Chandrasekharan, a retired LIC agent, was in his bed when the incident happened and he fell into an 8-foot deep pit after the bedroom floor caved in. He suffered injuries and shouted for help when his wife Uma came running from the kitchen on hearing his cries. She also slipped into the pit as soon as she entered the room.

Residents of the other five flats reached Chandrasekharan’s flat and helped the couple to climb out of the pit with the help of a ladder. The incident created a flutter in the area after the cave-in took place at the SSVK apartment complex located on Mouna Sami Madam road near Ambattur OT.

All the 14 residents of the six flats, including Chandrasekharan and his wife, came out of the complex after alerting the police and fire control room.

Firemen, after inspecting the building, said that the reason for the incident could be that the well under it was not properly filled during the time of construction two years back. After the melee, all families, except Chandrasekharan and his wife, went to their respective flats. Chandrasekharan and wife went to their relatives’ place to spend the night after visiting doctors. His son, wife and their child, were not at home when the incident happened. The residents have decided to take up the issue with the apartment builders, police said.
