Hyderabad: Prisons to create 1,000 jobs
Hyderabad: The prisons’ department will create over 1,000 private jobs in the next year for ex-convicts after their release.
Briefing mediapersons, director-general, prisons, Vinoy Kumar Singh said, “We have petrol bunks in Cherlapalli, Chanchalguda and Nalgonda. We are planning to set up petrol bunks at all district jails. Besides this, we will take over about 90 petrol bunks which are not functioning.”
He said IOC has handed over a petrol outlet at Uppal, which was seized by officials earlier for tampering with automated chips. “We have been approac-hing officials from both the IOCL and HPCL seeking non-functioning bunks,” he said.
Of those working at petrol bunks run by the prisons department, 23 are hardcore criminals who have shown improvement in their attitude.
“Prisons’ industries have experienced 50 per cent growth in 2015-16 compared with the previous financial year. We are expecting 100 per cent growth in the current financial year,” Mr Singh said.
The department would launch exhibition-cum-sale counters at all state capitals. “Products manufactured by the inmates will be displayed and sold at these exhibitions. We have tied up with GE Capital to market our products. They have provided a vehicle which goes around the city to sell the products,” he said. The workers are to be paid Rs 7,000 to Rs 12,000 and benefits.
Tourists can spend day in jail
The Telangana state prisons’ department plans to allow tourists to spend a day in a jail, having prison food and participating in disciplinary activities. The ‘Feel the Jail’ scheme will be offered at the Sangareddy Heritage Jail-cum-Museum. Prisons’ DG V.K. Singh said, “We will rent out a cell to tourists in the prison museum. The tourists will have jail food and face disciplinary activities.”
