Police help not needed to cleanse politics: CM Pinarayi Vijayan

Police should focus on imparting its duty without fear and favour

KOCHI: The help of police is not needed to cleanse politics and the police should focus on imparting its duty without fear and favour, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Saturday. Speaking after inaugurating the concluding session of the silver jubilee celebrations of the police co-operative society in the district, the Chief Minister said corruption will not be tolerated at any level. In a hard hitting speech, Mr Pinarayi said that "ministries will come and go, but, the police force should remain impartial and act objectively without looking at the political colour of the ministries".

Stating that the help of the police is not needed for improving the politics, he said no one should be under the illusion that all problems will be resolved through the change in the administration. The Chief Minister also said the differences in the society are also having its reflection in the police force leading to a compartmentalisation in the force.

"Even before becoming the Chief Minister, I have warned about dangers posed by compartmentalisation," he said. If such trends continue it would eventually destroy even the freedom for organisation enjoyed by the police at present, he added. Mr Pinarayi said the demand for eight-hour duty schedule for the police was genuine, but added that a police official cannot refuse to do duty beyond eight hours. Mr. Pinarayi complimented the police team involved in investigation in the Jisha case and the Ashwathy murder case in Kottayam.
