Convene all-party meet on Palar issue, Vaiko urges TN CM

Mr Vaiko and his party members met the family members of the late farmer Srinivasan and conveyed their condolences.

VELLORE: The MDMK general secretary, Mr Vaiko on Saturday urged the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms. J. Jayalalithaa to convene an all-party meeting immediately to discuss the problems faced by farmers in the state in the wake of Andhra Pradesh raising the walls of the check-dam across Palar river near Pullur.

Mr Vaiko, who visited the check-dam site along with the party’s assistant general secretary Mallai Sathya, district secretaries Subramani, Kannadasan and Vaniyambadi municipal secretary Nazir Khan, said he was hopeful of a favourable judgment from the Supreme Court in the Tamil Nadu government’s case against the Andhra Pradesh government in this issue.

He said that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa could meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and explain to him about the violation of the rules of the river-water sharing agreement of the Andhra Pradesh government.

Mr Vaiko and his party members met the family members of the late farmer Srinivasan and conveyed their condolences. The farmer had committed suicide by allegedly jumping into the Palar, over the Andhra Pradesh government’s action in raising the check-dam wall and against taking over of the administration of the Kanaka Natchiyamman temple from the Tamil Nadu government.
PMK PROTESTS IN VELLORE:

Earlier in the day, hundreds of PMK cadres led by the party’s youth wing leader and Dharmapuri MP, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss staged a protest near the district Collectorate here on Saturday over the Palar check-dam issue. The PMK leader said he would personally take up the issue with the Union Water Resource minister, Ms Uma Bharathi during the Parliament session on Wednesday. An all-party delegation from Tamil Nadu should also meet the Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi and discuss the issue, Dr Anbumani suggested
