Farmer ends life at Erravalli village, locals blame land acquisition

Karunakar poured kerosene over his body and set himself ablaze.

Hyderabad: A 33-year-old farmer committed suicide at Erravalli village in Medak district on Monday. A group of local activists claimed the farmer, N. Karunakar, ended his life as he was troubled about the Mallanna Sagar project land acquisition. Police denied the claims and said family disputes were behind the suicide.

Karunakar poured kerosene over his body and set himself ablaze. He succumbed after a while, police said.

Local activists, who are protesting against the government demanding adequate compensation for their lands said that Karunakar’s family had land at the project site and that he was troubled as it was being taken over by the government soon.

Meanwhile, Thoguta police, who investigated the background of Karunakar, said that he did not have land at the project site.

“His wife had quarrelled and left a few days back. He was troubled as she was not ready to come back. Today, he set himself ablaze,” said L. Ramanjaneyulu.

The inspector said they are thoroughly investigating the case.
