Scattered rains bring down temperature in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The heat wave seems to have gradually receded from the state. There was heavy rainfall in various parts of Malappuram, and conjuring visions of cooler days, in Palakkad, too. The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall (above 7 cm) at one or two places in the state till May 8.

Nonetheless, figures till May 4 shows that rainfall deficiency has crept up to above 60 per cent. Palakkad still recorded the highest temperature in the state, but it is 39.3ºC, markedly less than the over 41ºC it had recorded consecutively for five days this month.

Though Wayanad, Kozhikode and Kannur have experienced high day temperatures as was the pattern this summer, there were scattered rainfall in these districts on Friday. There has been a dramatic fall in the day temperatures of coastal areas, too.

It rained at many places in the state on Friday. Perinthalmanna (Malappuram district) reported heavy rainfall of 8 cm. The other places where rainfall was recorded are: Parambikulam (Palakkad) 6 cm; Perumbavur (Ernakulam district) and Konni (Path-anamthitta) 4 cm each; Mancompu (Alappuzha) 3 cm; Irikkur and Panniyur (both in Kannur), Vyttiri (Wayanad district), Pattambi and Meenkara (both in Palakkad) and Alappuzha 2 cm each; and Taliparamba and Thalasserry (both in Kannur), Kuppady and Mananthavady (both in Wayanad), Alathur and Thrithala (both in Palakkad), Kumarakom (Kottayam district), Munnar and Peermade (both in Idukki)1 cm each.
