KOZHIKODE: Following the path of the Government Boys Higher Secondary School Koyilandy, that has set an example in promoting co- education, all the single sex schools under Koyilandy assembly constituency will become co- ed. The mission is also part of the Union Government’s recommendation to all Government schools to convert them into mixed schools. The first to move in that direction will be the Payyoli Government Boys Higher Secondary School and Payyoli Government Girl’s Higher Secondary School.
They have decided to start the procedure of converting into mixed schools latest by the upcoming academic year. It was the Koyilandy Government Boys HSS that first took the initiative in the District to convert into a co-ed school. Soon after the conversion was announced, authorities witnessed a rush of girl students applying for admission, a positive sign that parents were accepting of the new format. Koyilandy MLA K Dasan said that under his constituency, there were nearly ten schools that were single sex school, and it was high time there were changes.
“As part of the education project envisaged by our team, named as DEEP, we asked the school authorities and also the PTA members their opinion on converting schools to mixed status. Since Koyilandy Boys HSS was doing well even after becoming co-ed, we got a good response from the faculty and parents”, he added. Speaking about the advantage of co- ed schools, Mr Dasan said with the regular interaction of boys and girls, there develops a better understanding. He added that co- ed helps in generating a healthy competition between boys and girls.
