Hyderabad: 200 gm kidney stones removed

The 60-year-old patient was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of fever, vomiting and weakness.

Hyderabad: More than 200 gm stones were removed from the kidneys of a farmer, Mohan Lal, in Medak district.

The 60-year-old patient was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of fever, vomiting and weakness.

During examination, it was found that his kidneys were not functioning as there were large bolsters of stones.

Dr Francis Sridhar Katumalla, consultant urologist and kidney transplant surgeon, said, “Draining out the urine from the kidneys was a problem as there were so many stones inside the organ. In the first phase, the patient had to be stabilised by putting stents to improve the functioning. In the second phase, a key-hole surgery was performed and a huge bulk of stones were removed.”

Dr Katumalla added, “Eighty per cent of kidney stone cases do not show any signs or symptoms. In a few cases, we find patients coming to the hospital with lower back pain and that is a sign that it could be due to stones. Kidney stone is a silent disease.”
