Kochi to observe plastic free day on December 8

The city area will be classified to five zones for implementing series of programmes to be undertaken under the project, informed Ms. Jain.

KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation will observe plastic free day on December 8 on the inaugural day of state government’s Haritha Keralam Mission initiative. A decision in this regard has been taken by a special session of the council held on Monday. Mayor Soumini Jain announced Rs 3 lakh for each division to carry out cleaning of drains and Rs 50,000 for mosquito eradication as part of Haritha Keralam programme. The city area will be classified to five zones for implementing series of programmes to be undertaken under the project, informed Ms. Jain.

“The campaign and publicity materials of Haritha Keralam should be environment-friendly. Plastic or flex boards won’t be permitted,” she said. Health committee chairperson V.K. Minimol said that waste from each division will be collected and transported to Brahmapuram without any delay. Meanwhile, Opposition councilors alleged that the administration is taking a non-cooperative stand towards the Haritha Keralam project. However, welfare standing committee chairman A.B Sabu said that despite time constraints, the project will be implemented.
