No salary for staff of Dairatul Maarif

The post of director, Dairatul Maarif, fell vacant after the retirement of Prof. Mahjabeen Akhtar on July 31.

Hyderabad: The post of director, Dairatul Maarif, has now been vacant for two months, thereby seriously affecting the functioning of the institution; one fallout being employees not getting their salaries as yet.

Dairatul Maarif was set up in 1888 at Osmania University campus to procure, transcribe, collate, edit and publish rare Arabic manuscripts of prominent scholars belonging to the classical era of Islam.

Incidentally, employees had earlier got their salary credited into their account. But no one was sure who credited the amount. The Registrar of Osmania University then sent intimation to the bank, asking it to stop all transactions related to the institution’s account until further orders.

When employees enquired with authorities, they got to know that the university has not disbursed salaries so far for the months of August and September.

The post of director, Dairatul Maarif, fell vacant after the retirement of Prof. Mahjabeen Akhtar on July 31. But she continued in the post based on an extension order issued by her as Secretary of the Executive Council. This was challenged in the High Court and subsequently the court struck down her continuance.

Meanwhile, the university registrar appointed Prof. Talat Sultana as the director of the institute. This was challenged by the former director in the High Court, which stayed the appointment of Prof. Talat, as her appointment order was issued by the Registrar and not the Vice Chancellor. The post of Director has been lying vacant ever since.
