Time to cheer for Telangana

Although there are scores of dictionaries in Telugu language, not many feature most of the words spoken by the Telangana public.

HYDERABAD: Buvva (meal), laggam (marriage), doopa (feel thirsty), methha (pillow), barre (buffalo), yaata (sheep), kanki (corn), sepu (apple), konaaku (at the last)... These are some words one gets to hear only in the districts of Telangana.

Although there are scores of dictionaries in Telugu language, not many feature most of the words spoken by the Telangana public.

In this backdrop, the Telugu University is taking up a project to come out with a dictionary for Telangana Telugu words, which it plans to bring out in three years.

According to Telugu University V-C, Prof. S.V. Satyanarayana, there are thousands of words spoken only in Telangana. The effort would be to include them all in the dictionary. “Language experts, literary greats from Telangana, community leaders, people living in interior areas and villages and various stakeholders will be consulted to include as many words as possible in the dictionary,” the V-C said.

The varsity will also take up three big projects – History of Telangana, History of Telangana Literature, and History of Telangana Culture – which will come out in book form.

Researchers will gather information and details dating back to several centuries for the purpose, Prof. Satyanarayana said, adding that these books will benefit students and job seekers alike preparing for competitive exams.

With the Telangana districts set for a big makeover with the reorganisation, the varsity will also be coming out with a district encyclopaedia. All information relating to the history, geography, socio-economic conditions, art and culture, tourism and temples etc. of each district will be gathered and compiled, the V-C stated.

Meanwhile, the Telugu university is holding an all-India Telugu women poets conference on October 7 and 8 as part of Bathukamma festivities. Poets settled in various states like AP, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, New Delhi, Maharashtra etc. will attend the event.
