Lifer in serial blasts case dies in Coimbatore Hospital

Coimbatore: A 45-year-old life convict in the Coimbatore serial bomb blasts case of 1998 died of cardiac arrest here on Wednesday at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) without responding to treatment.

Abdul Ozeer of Thippu Nagar near Karmbukadai in Coimbatore, convicted in the 1998 serial blasts case, has been serving his life term in the Coimbatore central prison.

However, Abdul was suffering from chest pain for the past one week and was being taken to the CMCH from prison daily for routine check-up and treatment, sources said.

On Wednesday, doctors suggested Abdul Ozeer go for a scan check, but prison officials took Abdul back to the jail without taking the scan, saying that they would have to get permission from their superiors for taking the convict for a scan test.

After reaching the prison, Abdul developed chest pain again and after getting the nod of the higher officials in the prison, he was again taken to CMCH, sources said.

Despite best of medical efforts, Abdul died without responding to treatment. On hearing of his death, hundreds of Muslims from various organization thronged CMCH triggering tension.
