Centre continues to draw flak over CMB
Chennai: The NDA government at the Centre continues to draw flak from all parties, including the ruling AIADMK, for siding with Karnataka and opposing the formation of the Cauvery Management Board, as protests against the Union government gradually picked up momentum.
The state unit of the BJP, facing resentment from all other opposition parties and farmers bodies, appears totally isolated and receiving brickbats from all directions.
The AIADMK mouthpiece Dr Namadhu MGR lashed out at the Centre and opposition parties, including the DMK, PWA and PMK which have announced agitations against the Central government.
Effigies and portraits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi were burnt by farmers’ organisations, besides pro-Tamil outfits and radical Leftist movements.
Farmers’ organisations in the delta districts have started protesting after the Supreme Court deferred its verdict on formation of CMB. The coordinator of Tamil Nadu Farmers Associations P.R. Pandian had commenced an indefinite fast demanding that the Centre withdraw its affidavit against Tamil Nadu.
The BJP headquarters in the city had become the target of radical Leftist organisations who seized the opportunity to paint the party as ‘anti-Tamil’. Protests were held in front of the BJP office by outfits like ‘Makkal Adhikaram’.
The Raj Bhavan also seems to have become a target of protests as Thamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi leader T. Velmurugan announced a protest to besiege the Raj Bhavan on Thursday. Periyarist movements like the Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam and Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam too had taken to the streets at many places to protest against the NDA government.
