Hyderabad: Rain plays spoilsport on Teachers' Day

Amid rain, students virtually thank teachers on their special day

Hyderabad: Teachers' Day celebrations in the city were washed out by incessant rains that disrupted plans of the much-anticipated day and the holiday that the government declared on Tuesday. Events were cancelled, postponed, or shifted to alternative venues.

Several educational institutions had organised outdoor gatherings and activities to honour the teachers.

In response to the adverse weather conditions, the Hyderabad district collector announced a holiday for educational institutions but the decision was met with mixed reactions. While it provided relief to some, it also brought frustration among students, parents, and schools alike.

"The announcement came around 8.30 am, just minutes before the scheduled opening of schools and colleges. By that time, countless students were already en route to their institutions, leaving us with no choice but to either endure the inconvenience or make the painstaking journey back home," said a irked parent.

Despite the rainfall putting a damper on traditional celebrations, the teachers undoubtedly felt the warmth of their students' appreciation who found innovative ways to convey their heartfelt thanks. The students embraced technology by sending heartfelt video messages, organising Zoom calls, and presenting virtual greetings and gifts to their beloved mentors.

"These creative efforts demonstrates the unwavering spirit of gratitude that students have for us teachers, even in the face of unexpected challenges. No salary or gift could match this," said K. Aruna Golapally, a teacher whose students called for a 30-minute call to wish her on the day.
