Cameraman arrested, Rs 12 lakh worth equipment recovered

VIJAYAWADA: Bapatla police arrested a cameraman and recovered Rs 12 lakh worth cameras, two mobile phones and a car from him.

Addressing media here on Tuesday, Bapatla SP Vakul Jindal said Sk. Subhani, an employee with a camera rental shop in Guntur, had been approached by accused Dara Paul Vijay Raj belonging to Kankipadu of Krishna district, seeking cameras on rent.

On May 22 early morning, acccused Vijay Raj, wearing a mask, took Subhani in a car along with the cameras to Odarevu village. The accused stopped the car at a shop and asked Subhani to get a water bottle. As he was getting the water bottle, Vijay Raj sped away, following which Subhani lodged a complaint with Chirala Rural police station, mentioning the value of cameras and equipment as Rs 12 lakh.

When police contacted the number Vijay Raj had left with Subhani, the phone was switched off.

SP Jindal said on credible information, police arrested the accused at Chirala RTC bus stand. Vijay Raj confessed that he is a cameraman. He had previously hired cameras from complainant Subhani. Presently, he is going through financial problems. So he decided to steal the cameras and make money. He hired a car on rental basis, changed the number plate of the car with a fake one, and picked up Subhani before driving off with the cameras from Odarevu village.
