Performing V-Cs should get second term by default: M Ananthakrishnan

Chennai: As in the IITs, the performing vice-chancellors of state universities should get the second term automatically, Anna University former Vice-Chancellor M.Ananthakrishnan said here on Tuesday. He was giving away ‘Best Teacher’ awards to the faculty members of the university at Teachers’ Day function held here.

While participating in the function he said, “The three-year term for the Vice-Chancellor is a very short period. By the time you enter there and find out one year is gone and initiating reforms will take another year. When you start implementing the reforms your term is over.”

“I think there must be a system where good performing Vice-Chancellors should have automatic renewal. Two terms is a minimum to lay a mark. Three years is not enough to implement the vision for the university,” he stressed.

He also pointed out the example of IIT directors. “In all IITs, the performance of existing directors will be evaluated in all IITs at the end of five years and if he had done well then they don’t consider the panel of names and the director would automatically get another term of five years,” he said.

“This system has worked very well in IITs. I hope governments would consider this for the post of Vice-Chancellors of state universities. The V-Cs feel constrained that they are not able to produce the results and implement the reforms,” he added.

He also requested the university’s Vice-Chancellor P.Duraisamy to record the authenticated history of the University from 1857. “How Madras University has influenced science, technology, society and what are the great names that emerged out of the institutions in the fields of science, politics, education business and industries should be recorded,” he said. Former Vice-Chancellor of the University S.P. Thyagarajan was honored at the function for receiving the APJ Abdul Kalam award from the state government.
