Kochi: Drive to rid government offices of plastic, e-waste
Kochi: The district Suchitwa Mission will roll out a mass campaign on August 14 to collect plastic and electronic waste from government offices and the Collectorate to facilitate their eco-friendly recycling. “The campaign, implemented along with the district administration, is being taken up following the success of a similar initiative at the Kakkanad Civil Station in January 25 when we collected 11 tonnes of e-waste. “We have written to all government offices to collect electrical and electronics items that are damaged beyond repair,” said Suchitwa Mission district co-ordinator Siju Thomas.
The programme is being implemented in tie up with the Clean Kerala Company Ltd, which will collect all the e-waste and take the same to Hyderabad for recycling. The materials include old computers, telephone, printer, photocopier, scanner, camera and air-conditioner among others. “The offices were asked to bring the materials to the Kakkanad Collectorate ground and will be handed over to the Clean Kerala Company Ltd at a function to be held on August 15,” the official said.
The e-waste is classified into five categories and the government offices are directed to hand over the list of materials by August nine. While Category-1 will include computer hardware items, Category two covers home appliances such as television and air-cooler among others. Category 111 includes charger, emergency lamp, light fittings, fan, telephone, mobile phone and motors among others. The last two categories deal with chokes, broken IT materials, metal waste, floppies, used toner cartridges and toys among others.
