Trial run of Vellayani water scheme begins
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) starting the trial run of the Vellayani Water supply scheme, areas such as Kalliyoor-Venganoor-Vizhinjam-Kovalam will have 24 hours water supply this year itself. “Custom-made motor pumps have been installed and electricity has been provided. We are presently testing all equipment and gauging its effect on the pipeline networks. It is a few months from commissioning. Tests will be exhaustive as we will not be able to stop the plants once the scheme is commissioned,” a senior KWA official said.
Around 22.9 Million Litres per Day (MLD) water will be pumped to filtration units inside the Agricultural University, Vellayani. It will be supplied to areas situated towards the Vizhinjam port project. “No special supply network will be added for the timebeing. However, to make the best use out of the project, we will need to lay pipelines and give connections for more. Pipelines will be laid once the government gives the nod,” he added.
Presently, water is fed through existing pipes only once a week in areas like Venganoor, Kovalam, Pallichal and Vizhinjam. New overhead tanks were constructed at sites at Peringammala, Vandithadam and Muttacaud. The project was started in October 2012 to meet the growing needs of one lakh citizens along the Vizhinjam-Kovalam corridor.
