Fake currency racket: Police probe Maoists angle
Coimbatore: The ‘Q branch’ police personnel suspect the fake currency notes gang to have supplied notes to the Maoists. They have started a secret investigation in the Anaikatty hills near the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border.
A special police team has come to know that the gang leader Sundar has connections with a ‘hawala’ gang in Kerala, sources told DC here.
Investigating the two persons who were recently arrested in connection with the fake currency racket, police received vital information about Sundar, the gang leader who is on the run.
The two were produced in court on Tuesday and are in judicial custody. Police have applied for police custody for further investigation.
A police source said that preliminary investigations revealed that the gang leader Sundar allegedly has connections with a Kerala-based ‘hawala’ group. Based on a tip-off, a special team has rushed to Kerala in search of Sundar.
Keedhar Mohamed, 55, one among the gang, was allegedly playing the role of the main agent, distributing the fake notes to other agents from various districts.
Police were shocked to see the mobile numbers of VIPs, politicians and businessmen in the call register list of Keedhar Mohammed’s cell phone.
Further investigations revealed that a bulk amount of fake notes were allegedly circulated in Karnataka during the Assembly elections last month. During the arrest, Keedhar Mohammed was residing at Anaikatty hills close to the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border in the Western Ghats, a Maoist area.
