Kerala: Poll code bars tribals from getting houses

The construction works in the colony came to halt in January due to lack of funds.

MALAPPURAM: Residents of Peruvambadam tribal colony in Nilambur have launched an indefinite hunger strike demanding immediate completion of houses under construction in the colony. The works under the hamlet development project 2013-14 was stuck because of a fund crunch in January.

Earlier, the residents met the district collector and ITDP officials but, according to agitating tribals, the discussions were futile. Around 50 residents from Peruvambadam colony started their indefinite hunger strike in front of the ITDP office in Nilambur.

The construction works in the colony came to a halt in January due to non-availability of the total fund. The implementing agency district Nirmithi Kendra has only received 77 per cent of the total funds meant for the project from the government.

Project officer K Krishnan had made it clear during the discussion that the issue would only be sorted out after May 16 because of the election protocol being in place.

But the agitating residents demanded immediate actions because they were raising the issue even before the elections were declared. Nirmithi project officer KR Beena assured the colony residents that actions would be taken to resume the construction works after more consultations with District Collector and Sub Collector. 20 houses for the tribals are under construction in the colony as part of the project.
