Kochi: Breathing life into the gasping organ donation programme in the state, a 19-year-old brain dead youth from Cheranallur here has given a new lease of life to four persons from different parts of the state, after his family decided to donate his organs.
Ajay Johny, son of Johny Naduvilaparambil, Cheranallur, was declared brain dead at Aster Medcity here at 4 am on Tuesday where he was undergoing treatment after the motorcycle he was riding met with an accident.
While his liver was transplanted on a patient at Aster Medcity itself, the pancreas and one kidney were donated to patients at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi while a patient at the Government Medical College, Kozhikode, received the other kidney. The recipients were selected from persons registered with the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing Mrithasanjeevani - an online transplant registry of patients waiting for organs under the state government.
Ajay, who was working as a welder, met with the accident on Varappuzha bridge on Saturday evening. Though he was immediately rushed to the hospital, his life could not be saved. Ajay was the only child of Johny who works as a mason and Sherly, a housewife.
"His parents decided to donate the organs to keep his memory alive while saving a few lives," said Richu George, the Ajay's cousin.
The organs were harvested by a medical team of Dr. Mathew Jacob and Dr. Noushif M.
