Kochi: 100 new CCTV cameras to curb violations

The current set of cameras, including 63 dome cameras and 36 fixed ones, were installed by Keltron.

Kochi: It’s been some time since most of the 99 CCTV cameras installed at major points in the city have gone dysfunctional, giving traffic violators a free ride.
However, the situation is finally set to change with the Kochi City Police all set to acquire 100 CCTV cameras on an urgent basis.

“We’ve earlier submitted a request to the Home department to allot 160 CCTV cameras. A formal decision has been taken to allot us 100 CCTV cameras soon, in a month, given the urgency of the situation.

The cameras will be the most modern type which can capture vehicle number plate,” said Nazeer M A, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic West).

The current set of cameras, including 63 dome cameras and 36 fixed ones, were installed by Keltron. However, police blamed the government agency for not carrying out repair works while the latter claimed that the police department is yet to clear outstanding dues.

“We’ll also find out which all ones of the existing lot of cameras can be repaired and used again,” the officer said.

Meanwhile, with a view to cut mishaps involving new generation bikes, the Motor Vehicle Department has started giving compulsory training to owners of such vehicle. “The MVD made training certificates mandatory to complete their registration process,” he said.
