Conservation of wetlands crucial: Dr Brandson S Corrie

Papers were presented on the topic by faculty members and research scholars.

Kochi: As the state is facing the impact of climate change in the form of floods and drought, experts have stressed the need for conserving wetlands and paddy fields.

Dr. Brandson S. Corrie, former chief conservator of forests, said that awareness creation and sensitising the public on the importance of wetland geography of Kerala was most important. He was delivering the keynote address during a national seminar on wetlands and climate change organised by the research department of fisheries and aquaculture, St. Albert’s College, Ernakulam, in association with Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment.

“There should be an institutional mechanism for regular monitoring of wetlands and a network of interest groups for information sharing and teamwork,” he said while delivering a talk on ‘Managing wetlands in climate change’

Dr. Venu G Nair, meteorologist at the Centre for Earth Research and Environmental Management, who spoke on the topic ‘Behaviour and reasons of climate change and its impact on wetlands over Kerala,’ explained the impact of climate change on wetlands and the ecosystem.

Dr. Prince S. Godson, assistant professor in the department of animal science in Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, spoke on ‘Current scenario in effects of climate change on wetland ecosystem.’
