Kerala Law Academy shut indefinitely
Revenue officials found violations with regard to use of academy land.

Thiruvananthapuram: The management of Kerala Law Academy Law College has decided to keep the college closed indefinitely, virtually undermining the pact it has reached with the SFI. Revenue principal secretary P.H. Kurian will visit the academy on Monday amid reports that a preliminary inquiry has found violation of land assignment conditions. The management had earlier informed that the college would open on Monday. However, it decided to close the college indefinitely taking into account chances of violence. The SFI activists had earlier maintained that they would attend classes if the college was reopened.
However, students’ organisations like AISF had vowed to continue the strike even as K. Muraleedharan, MLA is on a hunger fast seeking the resignation of Ms Lakshmi Nair. The efforts by the education minister to end the strike failed on Saturday with the students remaining firm on the resignation of Ms Nair. The SFI had called off the strike following the management’s decision to debar her for five years from the post of principal.
Sources said that the revenue officials in the report submitted to Mr P.H. Kurian had found many violations in the utilisation of the land in the possession of the law academy. The academic activities were restricted to an area of 1.5 acres. The remaining land was used for other purposes like quarters for the families of the trust members. The college canteen has been effectively changed into a hotel. A bank branch was also functioning on the premises of the academy, said the report.
However, academy director N. Narayanan Nair has dismissed such reports pointing out that there was only a college canteen and no hotel in the academy. Many colleges have branches of banks on their premises to help the students pay their fees, Mr Nair said. “Ms Lakshmi Nair will not be asked to resign. We have already asked her to stay away from work for five years. It is sufficient punishment,” Mr Nair said.
