Kannur University functioning back to normal as strike ends
KANNUR: The functioning of Kannur University has returned to normal with the withdrawal of strike by a section of employees who were protesting against the suspension of an employee. The employees under the Kannur University Employees Organisation (KUSO) had been on strike for 17 days over the suspension of section officer K. Prabhath Kumar by the syndicate. The syndicate sub-committee for staff approved the Pro-Vice-Chancellor’s report for revoking the suspension.
The strike had severely affected the university’s functioning. The officer was suspended following his alleged failure to provide a note on the hearing of two affiliated college principals to the syndicate meeting held on November 1. The syndicate accused the officer of dereliction of duty and initiated disciplinary action. However, the KUSO alleged that the officer was made a scapegoat for an old issue between the syndicate member and CPM leader Prakashan Master.
“According to the rule, the VC is required to issue an order for any item to be placed in the syndicate. The VC gave the order only on December 19 but the syndicate wanted it on November 1 itself,” the KUSO alleged. Interestingly, Mr Prakashan Master is also a member of the syndicate sub-committee which recommended the withdrawal of the suspension.
