Water scarcity looms large in Kozhikode

V.D. Joseph told DC that the district panchayat should coordinate the work to face the water shortage in the hill areas of Thamarassery.

KOZHIKODE: A severe water crisis is looming large over the high ranges in the district with the failure of monsoons, but still a there is no holistic plan to meet the situation, according to the district panchayat members and other representatives of local bodies of the area. The city suburbs may be spared of the crisis as the Kerala Water Authority is implementing the Japan -funded JAICA drinking water project which has almost covered the city and parts of Vadakara and Thamarassery taluks.

Engappuzha ward district panchayat member V.D. Joseph told DC that the district panchayat should coordinate the work to face the water shortage in the hill areas of Thamarassery. “Though many projects submitted by various panchayats were cleared by the district panchayat, a focused approach to address the water woes should be started on a war-footing,” he added.

Kodanchery district panchayat member Annamma Mathew said that there are many villages in her ward which are struggling to get drinking water. There should be a concerted effort by all to solve the issue,” she added. However, district panchayat president Babu Parassery is confident that the administration with the support of other local administrative bodies will be able to ensure drinking water for all. “We are assessing the situation and necessary steps will be taken soon,” he said.
