Kozhikode Corporation warns on waste dumping

Mayor calls meeting of city hospitals, hotels to discuss waste disposal.

KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode Municipal Corporation Mayor Thottathil Raveendran will call a meeting of City hospitals and hotels to discuss the implementation of effective waste disposal. It is learnt that the Mayor will convey to them to follow the scientific disposal of waste or face stringent action. Recently, two prominent hospitals in the City were caught red-handed while dumping hospital waste in a mangrove forest area in Parayancheri ward in the City. The waste seized by the public was then taken back to the hospital and unloaded under the leadership of the ward councillor.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Mayor Thottathil Raveendran said that the steering committee meeting on Monday will decide the date of the meeting. “We will strictly convey the need to follow proper waste treatment methods. Those hospitals not complying with our directions have to close down. Even if they go for legal remedies, they are not going to get away” he added.

“At present, the hospital authorities are of the view that their responsibility is over once they give contracts to a particular person or agency to remove the waste. We would like to make it clear that hospitals are responsible for the waste until its disposal is done in a proper way,” added K.V. Baburaj, Corporation Health Standing Committee Chairman.
