Thrissur: The Wadakkancherry rape scandal has thrown light into the past of the three CPM members in the municipal council even as their political opponents allege that money power played a definite role in their political growth on the fast lane. P.N. Jayanthan, accused in the rape case, was working in the construction sector 10 years ago and later became a construction contractor. Madhu Ambalapuram, another councillor, had worked in the Shiva Sena before crossing over to the CPM a few years ago. He, too, was associated with construction industry. P.R. Aravindakshan, the third councilor linked to the imbroglio, was a taxi driver and became an active CPM worker nearly 10 year ago.
“Now, they have enough money to splurge with no definite source of income,” said K. Ajith Kumar, opposition leader in the civic body. “There are allegations that they are benamis of political leaders and top officials. They lend money thorough unauthorised means and are into private financing with the help of goons.” He demanded a detailed inquiry into source of income of the three councilors.
Wadakkachery MLA Anil Akkara had also come out in the open stating the councilors had no ‘Communist mindset’. Mr Jayanthan, however, denied the allegations and said his opponents were jealous of his rise in politics as he came from a humble background. His supporters echoed the same sentiments saying some in the party are also working against Mr Jayanthan.
