Kochi: The Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court on Friday adjourned the anticipatory bail plea of CPM leader V.A. Zakir Hussain, an accused in the kidnap of a businessman. The state opposed the bail application and submitted that the former Kalamassery CPM area secretary is involved in 13 criminal cases registered in several police stations in the district. Police registered the FIR on October 19 and till then Zakir was absconding. According to police, cases are registered against Zakir for obstructing police personnel on duty and in connection with various protest marches organised by the CPM in recent years.
Cops have also registered cases under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984 (PDPP Act) and obstruction of the official duty of the police. According to the police, he may influence the witnesses in the case and if he is released on bail, that will affect the investigation. The Palarivattom police registered case against Zakir Hussain after Jube Paulose from Vennala filed a complaint alleging that Hussain had threatened him demanding to withdraw from a business deal with Sheela Thomas, a native of Kakkanad. Along with Zakir, his accomplices Karukappily Siddique and Kothadath Faizal also filed bail applications. They are in police custody now.
