A miraculous escape between the rails

Chennai: In a miraculous escape, a 65-year-old man extricated himself unscathed from under an EMU that came to a screeching halt at the Pallavaram suburban station on Wednesday after having managed to squeeze himself safely in the space between the two rails as he accidently came close to the train, going towards Tambaram.

The man, Ravi, hailing from Thirumalaisai, had come to Pallavaram on some work and was returning home when he suddenly found himself walking on the track on which the EMU was coming slowly towards him.

Since he had no time to jump out of the track, he lay down between the rails and held his head low to the ground, letting the train pass over him.

Commuters waiting on the platform and also the EMU motorman, who saw the man falling before the train and gasped as it passed over him, rushed to help him out after the train stopped only to see him lying unscathed but unable to move out through the limited space below the wheels.

After about 15 minutes of struggle, the man crawled out to safety guided by the commuters who had gone to his help. Though he said that he was okay and did not require any medical help, he was given first aid at the Chromepet Government Hospital and then allowed to go home.

The EMU suffered a delay of 20 minutes as it had to wait for the man to extricate himself out of the tracks.
