KOZHIKODE: The Nadakavu police is likely to slap UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) on one of the two Salafi preachers, who propagate extreme ideology and instigate believers to flee to the caliphate to lead a real Islamic life. The prominent among the duo is Shamsuddin Palath aka Shamsuddin Fareed, 42, from Chevayur here, whose speeches are available on YouTube.
According to investigating officers, Palath has connection with the 10 youth who were held with IS links on Sunday. A case for instigating communal violence was charged against him on the complaint of Mr Shukur, government public prosecutor in Kasargod. Two provocative speeches were delivered by Palath at Karaparambu here in 2014. “We are mulling to slap UAPA on him after completing the procedures,” Nadakavu Inspector Ashraf Thengalakkandiyil said.
Palath says that true Muslims cannot live amidst ‘Khafirs’ as Allah would question it. “We cannot take part in or cooperate with the festivals or birthday celebrations of ‘Shirks’. No wishes to their functions or donation to temples are allowed,” he says. According to him, a true Muslim can only show justice to non-Muslims but it could not develop as a bonding. Palath, having Masters Degree in Arabic, hails from Chevayur, Kozhikode, and was a teacher in various Arabic institutions. He was arrested in 2012 by Tirur police for allegedly raping his student in an Arabic college in Valavannur. Another preacher is a young man based in Kannur city.
More arrests likely
More arrests are likely in connection with the Kanakamala meeting of suspected pro-IS youngsters, according to officials. The Kerala and Tamil Nadu units would investigate the case jointly as one among the arrested, Abu Basheer aka Rashid aka Buccha aka Dalapati aka Ameer, 29, is a native of Masjid Street, GM Nagar, South Ukkadam, Coimbatore. The NIA Tamil Nadu unit has already picked up some of the relatives and acquaintances of the accused and the interrogation is on, it is learnt.
The NIA units of Delhi, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala had been tracking the movement of the accused involved in the conspiracy, according to the agency. However, various investigation agencies are divided on the arrest. A section is of the opinion that most of the participants are minor players at the grassroots level in the pro-IS recruitment hierarchy. By monitoring the movements of the youngsters, it would have been easier to identify the major players of the state who would be more cautious from now onwards, it was stated.
