45,000 government schools to do self-evaluation

Ratings, to be based on 7 key parameters, will be verified with external evaluation.

Chennai: In a first ever attempt, nearly 45,000 government and government-aided schools in the state are to do self-evaluation for three-level rating based on various parameters including teacher-learning assessment, resources availability and learner’s progress.

Under the National Programme on School Standards and Evaluation (NPSSE) also known as ‘Shaala Siddhi’ state directorates of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) will undertake this exercise.

First, the individual school will be asked to do a self-evaluation based on seven key domains. The school have to upload the information on the dashboard created for this programme. Later, the information will be verified with external evaluation.

“All government schools will have to do the self-evaluation. But, the external evaluation will be done on sample basis because it’s difficult to physically verify all 45,000 schools,” said Pooja Kulkarni, state project director, SSA.

“We expect to complete the self-evaluation process in December. After that, the external evaluation will be done,” she said. The schools will be categorised into three levels after the self-evaluation and external evaluation.

Level 1 is the indicator of the best school and schools, which come under level 2 needs improvement and the level 3 is the indication that the schools are not up to the mark.

“If the school fall in level 2 or level 3 categories then the individual school will be asked to prepare a school development plan for reaching the next level in a specified time frame. Schools in Level 1 will be the self-relying and model schools,” an RMSA official said.

This exercise will let schools identify themselves like what is their current status and what they need to do to move to the next level, officials said. They are also hoping that it would facilitate the system to be responsive to school-specific needs and initiate appropriate interventions.

The training programme for school headmasters to upload their self-evaluation data will commence from this month. Each school has to a create login ID by using UDISE code on the online dashboard and feed the self-evaluation data for each domain.

This self-evaluation will give a clear picture to the schools where they are now and we also know the need of the individual school. We can plan accordingly, officials said.

Though other states are planning the self-evaluation under ‘Shaala Siddhi’ on the sample basis, in Tamil Nadu the self-evaluation is being done for all the 45,000 government and government-aided schools.
