Beach mineral cases adjourned

The First Bench, after AG's submission seeking time, posted the petitions in first week of October.

Chennai: The Madras HC on Monday adjourned to early October the cases relating to beach mineral mining and export following request from the Advocate General seeking time for the filing of the report by the Satyabrata Sahoo committee that had gone into the stocks of mined beach mineral.

Among the cases that came up before the First Bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M. Sundar was the petition from VV Mineral Skilled Employees Association seeking the reopening of the beach mineral mining factories, now closed for over two years, praying that thousands of displaced families have been facing extreme financial stress owing to une-mployment.

Another petition related to prayer from a beach mineral company, Transworld Garnet, to remove the amicus curie citing alleged vested interests and bias.
Yet another petition sought vacating of stay of the single judge order of 2015 so that the beach mining operations, which were stopped owing to state government orders earlier, could be resumed.

Apart from causing huge losses to the mining companies and loss of livelihood to thousands of employees in their factories, the halt of mining had also affected the country's foreign exchange earnings since the entire quantum of mined beach mineral was being exported.
