VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has started relocating 524 families from Kanakadurga Varadhi to Koti Nagar in Krishna Lanka area of Vijayawada city before taking up construction of a retaining wall along the left bank of Krishna River.
Building of the retaining wall at an estimated cost of Rs 125 crore will prevent Krishna River from flooding low-lying areas of Vijayawada city. The 524 families, which had been living on encroached lands along the river course from Kanakadurga Varadhi to Kotinagar, are being relocated to G+3 houses constructed by VMC in Ajith Singh Nagar.
Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy had assured during foundation ceremony of G+3 units that these families will be provided houses constructed by the government
The relocation process started on Wednesday and will continue for the next few days under supervision of VMC city planner, chief engineer and chief medical officer.
Commissioner V. Prasanna Venkatesh and mayor Rayana Bhagyalakshmi, along with sub-collector Pravin Chand, supervised the relocation process.
