Kerala: A student-powered drive against booze
Kollam: The local residents of Karunagappally, the municipality that topped the list of the highest consumption of alcohol in the State, has joined hands against intoxication to erase its bad reputation. The idea to fight drugs was formed in the minds of the students of the Government regional fisheries technical higher secondary school in Cheriyazheekkal and has become a mass movement that has been taken up by the entire municipality. The project ‘Karunagappally with one mind against drugs’ will announce its presence in a massive rally at Karunagappally on August 11.
The rally will have students, local residents, politicians, artists, and cultural leaders and will start at the school at 2 pm and conclude at the Town hall. The public meeting will be inaugurated by Fisheries Minister J. Mercykkutty Amma in the presence of R. Ramachandran MLA. “The students of the school started the programme to create awareness to fight such social evils. The programme was later taken up by the responsible citizens of Karunagappally to make it a model for the entire State. The students, as part of their contribution, have set up specially designed display boards and message cards to bring down the dangerous consumption of alcohol,” Anil V. Nagendran, filmmaker and general convenor of the programme, said.
The Dr. V.V. Velukkutty Arayan Memorial Govt. Regional Fisheries Technical Vocational Higher Secondary School in Cheriyazheekkal has also included arts and literature as part of its curriculum, aiming at the holistic development of the students. The seats in the school are completely reserved for children from the fishermen community.
