MALAPPURAM: Seventy passengers and a five-member crew onboard Bengaluru-Kozhikode SpiceJet flight had a narrow escape on Friday when the aircraft skidded off the runway on landing at Calicut International Airport in Karipur. Nobody was hurt in the incident which took place at around 8 am. Slipping off the runway, the flight veered towards its left on landing and damaged five lights of runway lighting system.
Though there was a slush in the area due to heavy rain, the pilot managed to bring back the aircraft to the runway safely without any damages. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered probe into the incident. “The DGCA team would soon come to the airport to inspect the runway as part of the investigation. The passengers and crew are unhurt and the aircraft has no damages. There are only minor damages to the runway lighting system,” the airport director J.T. Radhakrishna said.
According to the airport authorities the flight had landed on the left part of the runway instead of centre. The ground safety team and rescue services were rushed to the spot immediately after the incident and took all precautions in view of the scary situation. The timely intervention of the rescue services helped the aircraft to move to safe area without affecting other services.
