Calicut University to plant over three lakh saplings
Kozhikode: Calicut University’s ambitious project ‘Ente Maram’ (My Tree) was launched as part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations on Friday at the main campus, Thenjippalam. The project, launched as part of a larger Green Campus initiative, aims at getting each student who is taking admission in the University and its 432 affiliated colleges this year to plant a sapling. According to statistics, over 3.5 lakh students enroll into various courses under the University and affiliated colleges, which means the same number of saplings would be planted on the campuses across five districts of the University’s jurisdiction.
Each sapling will have a tree guard on which the details of the plant, student's name, department and year are marked. Speaking to DC, University Green Committee Convener Dr John E. Thoppil said that ahead of the launch in affiliated colleges, the students would be giving training on how to plant the sapling and also how to take care of it. “Two students each from the affiliated colleges will attend the training programme conducting by the University in the coming days and they will in turn educate the rest of the students,” he said.
Training classes for students will be held on August 16 (St Thomas College, Thrissur for Palakkad and Thrissur), August 17 (JDT Islam College of Arts and Science, Vellimadukunnu for Kozhikode and Wayanad) and August 22 (Manjery Unity Women’s College for Malappuram). The project was inaugurated on the University campus when M.Sc Geology student E.C. Khadeejath Huda planted a mango sapling in the orchard near Tagore Niketan.
