One dies in ambulance crash in Thrissur

33-yr-old heart patient was being taken to hospital

Thrissur: A 33-year-old heart patient who was being taken from a hospital in Kodungallur to another in Thrissur for further treatment died after the ambulance carrying him went off the track and hit a container truck coming from the opposite direction at a sharp curve at Chiravalavu in Nadavaramba, Irinjalakuda, in the wee hours of Thursday. Two persons including the ambulance driver, who suffered severe injuries, are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Thrissur, Irinjalakkdua police said.

The deceased is Thekkeveetil Girijavalabhan of Kodali near Puthukkad. The ambulance that hit the trailer then hit a tree and patients along with his relatives in the vehicle got stuck inside it and were later taken out by the fire force and police officials. Though the victim was rushed to a hospital in Irinjalakuda, the doctors declared him brought dead.

The postmortem report says he suffered a heart attack. Irinjalakuda SI M. J Jijo told DC that the preliminary investigations revealed that the driver could not properly negotiate the sharp curve. A case has been registered invoking section 304 IPC for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. A relative of the deceased, Chirayil Jayakumar of Mala, and an ambulance service employee, Pallippuram Shoby of Poonkunnam, also suffered serious injuries.
