HYDERABAD: Forgetful rail passengers have left behind several items worth Rs 90.96 lakh since the beginning of the year, according to the Railway Protection Force, which dutifully tagged and preserved them.

In all the 414 incidents, the RPF could return the items, including mobile phones, laptops, baggage and documents. In 398 cases, passengers came back searching for the list items but in the other cases the RPF personnel traced the passengers and returned them the goods.

Among their biggest find was a backpack that a woman passenger had left behind, which contained Rs 3 lakh cash, a laptop and a passport.

Returning lost property is part of ‘Operation Amanat’. On June 5, the RPF-Secunderabad retrieved left-over luggage in four incidents.

Last year, up to May, RPF-Secunderabad retrieved goods worth Rs 1.02 crore in 357 incidents. The number of such cases this year saw a 12.04 per cent increase, said Debashmita C Banerjee, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner (SDSC), Secunderabad division.

She said those who lost any items could call the helpline number 139.
