BBMP to Bescom: Why are pruned branches still on roads?

People were registering complaints with the BBMP, who have now directed Bescom to inform Palike authorities before pruning branches.

Bengaluru: The BBMP has ordered Bescom to ensure that after trimming of tree branches, the remains have to be deposited at the nearest BBMP park, from where they will be collected.

The public are complaining against Bescom about leaving trimmed branches and leaves on streets and this is affecting pedestrians and motorists. It is worse when it gets dark as no one can notice these branches lying on roads or footpaths. Pedestrians can trip and fall or motorists can run into these branches and injure themselves.

People were registering complaints with the BBMP, who have now directed Bescom to inform Palike authorities before pruning branches and also to ensure that cut branches and leaves are dumped at nearest BBMP parks.

A senior BBMP official said, “At several places, we have found Bescom leaving cut branches on footpaths and roads. We have told them not to do it, and we will enter into an agreement where they have to inform the local BBMP office before pruning trees, so that we can assist them and also help them in clearing the spot.”

A Bescom official confirmed that they have received directions from the BBMP and will act accordingly. “We are also trying to ensure that trees are not pruned or cut unnecessarily, as we too are facing the wrath of residents and environmentalist. But when branches come in contact with live wires or transformers, we have to trim them.”
