Hyderabad: The Indian Embassy in Muscat replied to the story of a 16-year-old minor girl who was married off to a 70-year-old Omani national against her wishes last year, after it was tweeted by Amjedullah Khan, on his official Twitter handle.
The Embassy stated that the minor had given written statement to Omani authorities that she was happy with her husband and does not wish to return to India.
Things came to light when the victim’s mother filed a complaint, post which the investigation began. Mr Khan of Majlis Bachao Tehrek (MBT) and an NRI activist said, “The girl is a minor and her statements cannot be considered.”
We are going to write to the ministry again and draw their attention, as the girl is being held captive. The police intervention into the case has also not helped much in extracting results up to the mark said Amjedullah Khan.
