Kerala: Now, nun from CMC to donate her kidney
KOCHI: One more person from a religious congregation has come forward to donate her organ following the footsteps of Fr Davis Chirammel, Kochouseph Chittilappilly and Pala Auxiliary Bishop Jacob Muricken. Sr Chaithanya, executive director of the Chavara Inspire Charitable Society under the Chavara Cultural Centre, has come forward to donate one of her kidneys to an ailing 43-year-old Alappuzha Muhamma native Saji Varkey.
Incidentally, Sr Chaithanya is also 43 years old. Sr Chaithanya is the second nun to donate her kidney. Sr Little Teresa, a member of the CMC Congregation, had donated her kidney last year. Sr Chaithanya is a member of CMC Congregation in Nedunkandam in Idukki.
As part of the process to donate her kidney, Sr Chaithanya presented herself before the authorisation committee at Alappuzha Medical College seeking consent for the donation. The donation is scheduled at Ernakulam Lisie Hospital and the date has not been fixed.
The family members of Saji are all diabetic patients and hence could not become donors. Because of this, Saji registered his name with the Kidney Federation of India headed by Fr Davis Chirammel. Sr Chaithanya had conveyed to Fr Chirammel her willingness to donate kidney sometime ago and when the latter informed her about the case of Saji, she readily agreed. She has also completed the medical examination for the same. Her blood group is O+.
