HC jails five officials for a month in contempt of court case

VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh High Court sentenced five officials to undergo one-month simple imprisonment and also fined them ₹1,000 each.

The officers jailed are former transport principal secretary and present health principal secretary M.T. Krishna Babu, APSRTC managing director D. Tirumala Rao, Tirupati RTC regional manager T. Chengala Reddy, chief engineer U.S. Srinivas and Nellore RTC executive engineer K. Koteswara Rao.

The court ordered all five officers to surrender before the High Court before May 16. The court further directed the registrar to send them to jail.

B. Surendra of Chittoor district, working as a field man in RTC, along with three others, moved the High Court in 2020 for regularisation of their services, complaining that the services of their juniors had already been regularized.

The court directed the state government to regularise the services of petitioners and pay their wages along with interest from August 1, 2022. However, when officials did not implement the orders, the petitioners lodged a contempt of court case in October 2022.

On this, the High Court passed orders on Tuesday to jail the officials. It asked senior officers in the state government to see that its orders are implemented.
