MM Hassan to lead KPCC until polls in October

A prominent leader of the Chandy camp told DC that Mr Hassan will lead the party in the run-up to the organisational elections.

Thiruvananthapuram: Acting KPCC president M. M. Hassan is likely to continue in his post till October when the party’s organisational elections will be completed. Thereafter, former chief minister Oommen Chandy may take over from him.

Mr Hassan, a protege of Mr Chandy, was made the interim president on March 25 following the resignation of Mr V. M. Sudheeran on March 10. Mr Hassan and 12 DCC presidents who met party vice-president Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi recently had told him to elect a new president after the organisational elections. A prominent leader of the Chandy camp told DC that Mr Hassan will lead the party in the run-up to the organisational elections.

“Hassan will lead the organisational elections which will be completed by October. After that a new president will be elected,” the source said.

Mr Chandy has repeatedly refused to take over as PCC chief, but his group leaders hope that he would change his stand under pressure eventually.

Recently, Mr P. C. Vishnunath, Mr Chandy’s loyalist, was made the AICC secretary in charge of Karnataka. Congress MP Sudarshan Nachiappan, who is the returning officer to hold the organisational elections countrywide, is expected to chair a meet of the political affairs committee at Indira Bhavan here on Tuesday.
