IIT-Hyderabad is seventh best tech institute in India
Hyderabad: The eight-year-old Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad has been ranked the seventh best institution to study engineering in India.
The ‘India Rankings 2016’ — the first-ever such ranking — was released by the National Institutional Ranking Framework, ministry of human resource development, on Monday. UoH continued to mark its presence nationally, being ranked the fourth best university.
Osmania University ranks 33rd in all-India rankings
Prof. U.B. Desai, director of IIT-H said, “The ranking is the highest among all new IITs. We certainly would like to do better and rank higher up in the coming years.” Vice-chancellor of UoH Prof. P. Appa Rao Podile credited the success to faculty, students and non-teaching employees.
Sixteen educational institutions from Telangana state and Andhra Pradesh made it to the top 100 in four categories — Universities, Engineering, Manage-ment and Pharma.
UoH was ranked fourth in the Universities category after Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University. The first two spots were occupied by Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai. International Institute of Information Technology-Hyderabad and Osmania University were ranked 23 and 33 respectively in the Universities category.
From Andhra Pradesh, Sri Venkateswara Univer-sity was at 63, JNTU-Kakinada at 69 and Yogi Vemana University at 92. IIT-Hyderabad ranked seventh in the Engineer-ing category with 77.22 points. IIT-Madras, with 89.41 points, ranked first.
The rankings also brought out the poor quality of engineering colleges in TS and AP. Only five figured in the top 100 from both states, whereas 16 colleges from neighbouring Maharashtra figured in the rankings. From TS, National Ins-titute of Technology-Warangal ranked 28 and Chaitanya Bharathi Ins-titute of Technology-Hyderabad ranked 71.
From AP, Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation-Guntur ranked 59, Sagi Rama-krishnam Raju Engineer-ing College-Bhimavaram ranked 73 and Vignan’s Foundation For Science, Technology and Resear-ch-Guntur figured 88th.
